NHTSA holds 8,863 complaints about the Hyundai Santa Fe across the 2001 to 2026 model years, and three years carry the most: the 2017 with 1,316, the 2013 with 803 and the 2007 with 683. From 2012 to 2020, engine is the top complaint category every year, peaking at 849 engine complaints for the 2017. The Santa Fe has 56 recall campaigns, and six of them carry a park-outside warning. NHTSA's audit query AQ23002 into Hyundai and Kia ABS module fires, which covers the 2013 to 2019 Santa Fe, is still open.

Hyundai Santa Fe complaints and recalls by model year

Owner complaints filed with NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation and distinct recall campaigns, for every model year with records, counted on September 28, 2026. The median model year up to 2021 drew 305 complaints; a year is marked to avoid when it is one of the three highest and drew at least twice that. Years after 2021 have had less time to collect complaints, so they are judged only if they already pass the same line.

2017: engine complaints well above any other year

The 2017 Santa Fe has 1,316 complaints, against a median of 305 per model year. These counts are raw totals, not adjusted for how many of each year were sold, and newer years have had less time to collect complaints. Engine is listed on 849 of the 2017 complaints. In the narratives, 407 describe engine failure, seizure or knocking and 237 describe stalling or loss of power while driving. Recall 17V578000 covers the 2017 because the crankshaft assemblies may have been produced with surface irregularities in the crankshaft pin, causing engine bearing wear. A defect petition, DP24001, on 3.3L Engine Loss of Motive Power for the 2017 closed in May 2024 without a recall.

2013 and 2014: bearing wear, fuel pipes and fire reports

The 2013 (803 complaints) and 2014 (655) follow, with 381 and 368 engine complaints, and they have the most fire reports of any Santa Fe year, 55 and 45. Recall 17V226000 covers both for machining errors during the engine manufacturing process that may cause premature bearing wear. A second recall for both years, 18V934000, addresses a high pressure fuel pipe that may have been damaged or improperly torqued during the engine replacement procedure, allowing fuel to leak. NHTSA's engineering analysis EA21003 into engine fires on the 2012 to 2014 closed in February 2024.

ABS module recalls with a park-outside warning

Five of the six park-outside recalls concern the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module, where brake fluid may leak inside the module or the module may malfunction, causing an electrical short: 20V520000, 21V303000 and 23V651000 (2013 to 2015), 22V056000 (2016 to 2019) and 22V810000 (2018). Three of those descriptions warn of an engine compartment fire, and NHTSA's audit query AQ23002 into these fires is still open. The sixth, 23V181000, covers the 2019 to 2023 because water on the tow hitch harness module circuit board may cause a short and a fire.

2007: air bags and the fuel system

The 2007 has 683 complaints and nine recalls, the most recalls of any Santa Fe year. Fuel/propulsion system (121), air bags (102) and electrical system (97) lead, and it tops the model for complaints mentioning brakes (150) and air bags (106). Recall 11V472000 (2007 and 2008) covers a driver's air bag clock spring that may become damaged over time, so the air bag may not deploy.

What to check on a used Santa Fe

  • Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup, which lists any recall not yet repaired on that car (see what else a free VIN check shows) and confirm the ABS module campaigns are complete on any 2013 to 2019. If one is open, park outside until it is repaired.
  • On a 2013 or 2014, confirm that 17V226000 and 18V934000 show as completed.
  • On a 2017, confirm 17V578000 was done, and on the test drive listen for knocking and watch for stalling or a check-engine light.
  • On a 2017 or 2018, check the oil level and look for leaks; these two years lead the complaints mentioning oil consumption or oil leaks, with 280 and 111.
  • If a 2019 to 2023 has a tow hitch harness, confirm 23V181000 was completed.
  • On a 2001 to 2006, look for corroded front coil springs (14V435000) and, on a 2001 to 2003, rear trailing arms (09V123000). These years lead the complaints mentioning rust or corrosion.
  • Before you settle on a price, check the seller's asking price against the Santa Fes for sale near you with the used car price check.

Then check what a specific Santa Fe is worth by VIN: the valuation, from $2.99, prices that VIN at its mileage near your ZIP code against cars for sale.

Investigations are opened when NHTSA sees a possible safety defect, often from complaints like the ones above. PE is a preliminary evaluation, EA an engineering analysis, RQ a recall query into whether an earlier recall went far enough, DP a defect petition and AQ an audit query.

How these numbers were counted

Complaints: NHTSA's complaints API for NHTSA model names SANTA FE, SANTA FE ICE, SANTA FE SPORT, SANTA FE XL, each complaint counted once per model year; hybrid and plug-in versions, which NHTSA files separately, are not included. Recalls: distinct campaign numbers from NHTSA's recalls databasefor the same names and years. Investigations: NHTSA's defect investigation file. All pulled September 28, 2026. These are counts of reports, not failure rates, and they say nothing about any individual car. For that, check the VIN.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common problems with the Hyundai Santa Fe?

Engine is the most cited NHTSA component category, on 3,112 of 8,863 complaints, followed by power train (1,017), electrical system (937) and service brakes (922). In the complaint narratives, 1,406 mention brakes, 1,359 describe engine failure, seizure or knocking and 1,251 mention a check-engine light.

What Hyundai Santa Fe years should I avoid?

The years to avoid are the 2017 (1,316 complaints), 2013 (803) and 2007 (683). The 2014, with 655, is also more than twice the median of 305 per model year. No year from 2022 onward is above that line yet, though newer years have had less time to collect complaints.

How many recalls does the Hyundai Santa Fe have?

NHTSA lists 56 recall campaigns for the Santa Fe. Six carry a park-outside warning: five for the ABS module on 2013 to 2019 models, such as 23V651000 for the 2013 to 2015, and one, 23V181000, for the tow hitch harness module on the 2019 to 2023.

Does the 2017 Santa Fe have engine problems?

Engine is listed on 849 of the 1,316 complaints for the 2017, and 407 of them describe engine failure, seizure or knocking. It was recalled under 17V578000 for crankshaft pin surface irregularities causing engine bearing wear, and a defect petition on loss of motive power, DP24001, closed in 2024 without a recall.
