Hyundai Elantra complaints and recalls by model year
Owner complaints filed with NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation and distinct recall campaigns, for every model year with records, counted on September 28, 2026. The median model year up to 2021 drew 285 complaints; a year is marked to avoid when it is one of the three highest and drew at least twice that. Years after 2021 have had less time to collect complaints, so they are judged only if they already pass the same line.

2013: brakes, steering and the most crash reports
The 2013 Elantra has 1,329 complaints, against a median of 285 per model year. These are raw totals, not adjusted for how many of each year were sold, and newer years have had less time to collect complaints. Service brakes (282), steering (271) and engine (235) lead, and the 2013 tops the model for complaints mentioning brakes (308), steering (283) and fire, smoke or a burning smell (78). It also has more crash reports (95), fire reports (31) and injury reports (50) than any other Elantra year. Two recalls, 16V574000 (2013) and 17V769000 (2013 and 2014), cover a brake pedal stopper pad that can deteriorate, leaving the brake light switch plunger extended so the brake lights stay on.
2008 to 2010: steering power assist
Steering is the top category for the 2008 (55), 2009 (144) and 2010 (233), and after the 2013, complaints mentioning steering peak in the 2010 (234) and 2009 (137). Recall 15V100000 covers the 2008 to 2010 because the electronic power steering (EPS) electronic control unit may sense a discrepancy in the steering input signals and disable the steering power assist.
2017 and 2012: engine complaints and loss of power
Engine leads the 2017 with 290 complaints, ahead of structure (134) and electrical system (111). That year also leads the model for complaints describing stalling or loss of power while driving (134), a check-engine light (123) and hesitation, jerking or surging (45). NHTSA's defect petition DP22003 on loss of motive power, covering the 2017 to 2021, closed in December 2023 without a recall. Recall 21V301000 covers the 2019 and 2020 because the piston oil rings may not have been properly heat-treated, which could result in engine damage. The 2012, with 674 complaints, is led by engine (140), electrical system (129) and air bags (128).
ABS fires, air bag inflators and seat belt pretensioners
Recall 23V651000 covers the 2011 to 2015 with a park-outside warning, because the ABS module may leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving. NHTSA's audit query AQ23002 into these fires remains open. A second park-outside recall, 23V526000, covers the 2023 because the controller for the Idle Stop and Go oil pump may overheat. Filed in May 2026, 26V307000 covers the 2015 and 2016 because the driver's air bag inflator may rupture during deployment. The 2021 and 2022 have four recalls between them for front seat belt pretensioners that may explode upon deployment in a crash: 21V796000, 22V123000, 22V218000 and 22V354000.
What to check on a used Elantra
- Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup, which lists any recall not yet repaired on that car (see what else a free VIN check shows) and confirm 23V651000 is complete on any 2011 to 2015; until it is, park the car outside.
- On a 2015 or 2016, confirm the driver's air bag inflator recall 26V307000, and on a 2021 or 2022, the seat belt pretensioner recalls.
- On a 2013 or 2014, have someone watch that the brake lights go off when you release the pedal, and confirm 16V574000 or 17V769000 was done.
- On a 2008 to 2010, confirm 15V100000 was completed.
- On a 2017, watch for a check-engine light, hesitation or stalling.
- On a 2001 to 2003, inspect the front lower control arms for corrosion (09V125000); these years lead the complaints mentioning rust or corrosion.
- Before you settle on a price, check the seller's asking price against the Elantras for sale near you with the used car price check.

NHTSA defect investigations
Investigations are opened when NHTSA sees a possible safety defect, often from complaints like the ones above. PE is a preliminary evaluation, EA an engineering analysis, RQ a recall query into whether an earlier recall went far enough, DP a defect petition and AQ an audit query.

How these numbers were counted
Complaints: NHTSA's complaints API for NHTSA model names ELANTRA, ELANTRA ICE, ELANTRA N-LINE, each complaint counted once per model year; hybrid and plug-in versions, which NHTSA files separately, are not included. Recalls: distinct campaign numbers from NHTSA's recalls databasefor the same names and years. Investigations: NHTSA's defect investigation file. All pulled September 28, 2026. These are counts of reports, not failure rates, and they say nothing about any individual car. For that, check the VIN.

Frequently asked questions
What are the most common problems with the Hyundai Elantra?
Engine is the most cited NHTSA component category, on 1,644 of 8,062 complaints, followed by air bags (1,190), steering (1,182) and service brakes (995). In the complaint narratives, 1,387 mention brakes, 1,284 mention steering and 1,217 mention air bags.
What Hyundai Elantra years should I avoid?
The years to avoid are the 2013 (1,329 complaints), 2017 (767) and 2012 (674). No other year old enough to judge is more than twice the median of 285 per model year, and among those years the 2021 has the fewest complaints, 130.
How many recalls does the Hyundai Elantra have?
NHTSA lists 49 recall campaigns for the Elantra. Two carry a park-outside warning: 23V651000 for the ABS module on the 2011 to 2015 and 23V526000 for the 2023. The newest, 26V307000, covers the 2015 and 2016 because the driver's air bag inflator may rupture during deployment.
What problems does the 2013 Hyundai Elantra have?
Its 1,329 complaints are led by service brakes (282), steering (271) and engine (235), and 308 of them mention brakes. Recalls 16V574000 and 17V769000 cover a brake pedal stopper pad that can deteriorate and leave the brake lights on, and the 2013 is also covered by the ABS module recall 23V651000.
