Source: NHTSA complaints, recalls and defect investigations for the 2000 to 2025 Toyota Corolla, 10,809 complaints in all, pulled September 28, 2026.

NHTSA holds 10,809 complaints about the Toyota Corolla across the 2000 to 2025 model years, and air bags dominate them: the category appears on 4,639 complaints and is the top one in every year from 2002 to 2018. The 2009 (1,533), 2010 (1,264) and 2005 (941) have the most complaints, with steering and vehicle speed control also heavy in 2009 and 2010. Nine of the 55 recall campaigns concern passenger frontal air bag inflators on 2003 to 2013 models, and two NHTSA investigations into air bag inflator rupture, EA15001 and EA21002, are still open.

Toyota Corolla complaints and recalls by model year

Owner complaints filed with NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation and distinct recall campaigns, for every model year with records, counted on September 28, 2026. The median model year up to 2021 drew 288.5 complaints; a year is marked to avoid when it is one of the three highest and drew at least twice that. Years after 2021 have had less time to collect complaints, so they are judged only if they already pass the same line.

Air bag complaints and inflator recalls

Air bags come up in 4,127 complaints, 38.2% of the total, peaking in the 2005 (484), 2009 (483) and 2006 (467). Under 18V883000 (2003 to 2005), inflators may explode due to propellant degradation, and 19V741000 (2003 to 2013) covers cars whose inflators were already replaced under a prior recall with inflators of the same design. NHTSA's engineering analysis EA15001 into air bag inflator rupture on the 2003 to 2005 has been open since 2015, and EA21002 into desiccated air bag inflator rupture, covering the 2003 to 2018, since 2021. A separate recall, 20V024000, covers the 2011 to 2019 because the air bag electronic control unit may malfunction in certain crashes, possibly disabling the air bags or seat belt pretensioners.

2009 and 2010: steering, speed control and brakes

The 2009 and 2010 have the most complaints, 1,533 and 1,264, against a median of 288.5 per model year. These are raw totals, not adjusted for how many of each year were sold, and newer years have had less time to collect complaints. Behind air bags, steering is the next category for both years (388 and 373), followed by vehicle speed control (204 and 200). NHTSA's preliminary evaluation PE10008 into steering wander or drift on these two years closed in 2011 without a recall. The same years lead for complaints mentioning brakes (248 and 277) and unintended acceleration (64 and 55). Two recalls cover the accelerator pedal on both years: 10V023000, because the pedal can get stuck in the wide open position when trapped by an unsecured or incompatible driver's floor mat, and 10V017000, for the friction lever inside the pedal sensor assembly.

2005 to 2008: stalling and the engine control module

Complaints describing stalling or loss of power while driving peak in the 2006 (79), 2007 (71) and 2005 (62), and the same three years lead for check-engine light mentions. NHTSA's engine stalling investigations PE09054 (2006) and EA10006 (2005 to 2008) both led to recall 10V384000, which covers 2005 to 2008 cars with the 1ZZ-FE engine and two-wheel drive because the engine control module (ECM) may have been improperly manufactured, with cracks possible at certain solder points.

2020: coolant leaks and overheating

The 2020 has 308 complaints, led by engine (108) and power train (39), and it accounts for 123 of the 286 complaints mentioning coolant leaks or overheating. The 2020 is also covered by 20V682000, because the low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank may fail.

What to check on a used Corolla

  • Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup, which lists any recall not yet repaired on that car (see what else a free VIN check shows) and confirm every air bag inflator recall on a 2003 to 2013 car shows as completed, including 19V741000.
  • On a 2011 to 2019, confirm 20V024000 for the air bag control unit was done.
  • On a 2009 or 2010, confirm 10V023000 and 10V017000, check the driver's floor mat is secured and compatible, and notice on the test drive whether the car wanders or drifts.
  • On a 2005 to 2008, confirm 10V384000 and ask whether the car has ever stalled or shown a check-engine light.
  • On a 2020, check the coolant level, look for leaks and ask whether it has ever overheated.
  • On a 2023 or 2024, confirm 24V878000, for a steering intermediate shaft that may fracture and detach from the steering column.
  • Before you settle on a price, check the seller's asking price against the Corollas for sale near you with the used car price check.

Then check what a specific Corolla is worth by VIN: the valuation, from $2.99, prices that VIN at its mileage near your ZIP code against cars for sale.

NHTSA defect investigations

Investigations are opened when NHTSA sees a possible safety defect, often from complaints like the ones above. PE is a preliminary evaluation, EA an engineering analysis, RQ a recall query into whether an earlier recall went far enough, DP a defect petition and AQ an audit query.

How these numbers were counted

Complaints: NHTSA's complaints API for NHTSA model names COROLLA, COROLLA HATCHBACK, each complaint counted once per model year; hybrid and plug-in versions, which NHTSA files separately, are not included. Recalls: distinct campaign numbers from NHTSA's recalls databasefor the same names and years. Investigations: NHTSA's defect investigation file. All pulled September 28, 2026. These are counts of reports, not failure rates, and they say nothing about any individual car. For that, check the VIN.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common problems with the Toyota Corolla?

Air bags are the most cited NHTSA component category, on 4,639 of 10,809 complaints, followed by steering (1,137), vehicle speed control (1,095) and electrical system (795). In the complaint narratives, 4,127 mention air bags, 1,475 mention brakes and 1,155 mention steering.

What Toyota Corolla years should I avoid?

The years to avoid are the 2009 (1,533 complaints), 2010 (1,264) and 2005 (941). The 2003, 2006, 2007 and 2011 are also more than twice the median of 288.5 per model year, while the 2018 has the fewest complaints among years old enough to judge, 134.

How many recalls does the Toyota Corolla have?

NHTSA lists 55 recall campaigns for the Corolla. Nine concern passenger frontal air bag inflators on 2003 to 2013 models, including 18V883000 for the 2003 to 2005, where inflators may explode due to propellant degradation, and 19V741000 for cars whose inflators were already replaced with the same design.

Is NHTSA still investigating Toyota Corolla air bags?

Yes. Engineering analysis EA15001 into air bag inflator rupture on the 2003 to 2005, opened in February 2015, and EA21002 into desiccated air bag inflator rupture on the 2003 to 2018, opened in September 2021, are both still open.
