Does Washington charge sales tax on a private-party car sale?

Yes. Use tax at the same rate as retail sales tax is paid to the Department of Licensing (vehicle licensing office) when the title is transferred and the vehicle is registered. Use tax is based on fair market value; the purchase price is accepted as the value if it is no more than 20% below fair market value or the fair market value is under $7,500 (WAC 458-20-17802), otherwise documentation of a lower value is required.

Does Washington give a trade-in credit on car sales tax?

What is the dealer doc fee cap in Washington?

Washington caps the dealer documentation fee at $200 (RCW 46.70.180(2)). Documentary service fee may not exceed $200 per vehicle sale or lease, must be disclosed in writing as negotiable before the agreement is signed, and must be separately designated from the selling price.
